Summary: I became Good Shepherd’s school nurse in August of 2016. I have been a licensed school nurse in ISD196 for 15 years, primarily at Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan. Prior to that, I was a pediatric and triage nurse at Group Health (HealthPartners) clinics. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Minnesota (Ski-U-Mah!). Add the other required school nursing licensures, and Icould (but don’t:)) sign her name: Cheryl Vatsaas, RN, BSN, PHN, LSN
Favorite verses: There are so many! Two I think on often as a nurse are Psalm 139:14 (we are fearfully and wonderfully made) and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (your bodies are temples).
Why Nurse Cheryl wanted to work at Good Shepherd: Nursing, like so many careers, is a calling. I have loved all the jobs I’ve been called to, but school nursing is the best! I love helping students who are sick or hurt to feel better, and I especially love helping them and their families learn how to take better care of their health. Getting to do that in a supportive school community is even better.
My nursing philosophy: You are in charge of you! I’m here to help you step up to the plate.
Hometown: I was born in St Paul, then moved 10 miles east to do all my growing up in (and with) Woodbury, MN, then-population 2000. “Home” is also West Virginia, where my parents were born and raised and most of my relatives live.
Home Life: I’m in Year 30 of the marriage adventure with my awesome husband Rick. We have two freshly grown children, Ingrid and Kristian, plus bonus son (-in-law) Luke and daughter (-in-law-to-be!) Erica. We love the outdoors, especially if it’s snowing! Cross-country skiing is my favorite thing, but I also love hiking, canoeing, and walking “Gunnar the Werepoodle”. We really love travel, and I enjoy foreign languages (I love practicing my bad Spanish, or my really bad Norwegian), reading and watching the Twins and Vikings.
