Athletic Events offered include:
Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in cross country. Practices are held after school, opposite the nights that soccer and volleyball practices are held. One cross country meet is held on the Wednesday before MEA weekend. The meet starts in the early afternoon. Runners compete against students in their same grade level from the area’s Lutheran Grade School League. At times, other meets are found to participate in.
Girls in grades 5-8 are eligible to be on the volleyball team. At times, 4th grade students are allowed to participate. Inclusion is based on the number of 5-8th graders on the team. Practices are held in Good Shepherd’s gym, two to three times per week. Home games are held in the Heritage Lutheran Church gym. Players compete against schools from the area’s Lutheran Grade School League. Games are once or twice per week, and held after school during the month of September. One or two tournaments are played during the season.
Soccer is offered to male students in grades 5-8. When the team is short of players, 4th graders are invited to participate. Practices are held twice a week at the field behind the Burnsville Byerly’s. Home games are held at Wolk Park in Burnsville. Players compete against schools from the area’s Lutheran Grade School League. Games are held once a week, and held after school during the month of September. Championship games are held in October.
Basketball is offered to all 5-8 grade students with the possibility of 4th graders joining the team, as team size allows. The season runs from late October to mid-February. Practices are held Monday-Thursday nights after school. Games are Friday nights with an occasional Saturday game. Younger students typically play on the B-team level and older students on the A-team. Home games are held at Heritage Lutheran Church gym. Practices are held after school in Good Shepherd’s gym. The B-team level goes to one season-ending tournament. The A-team level plays in several tournaments. More information about basketball and other sports can be found in our Sports Handbook. A schedule of games and practices will be given out at our pre-season basketball meeting and will be posted for all to download or print.
Cheerleading coincides with the basketball season and is offered to girls in grades 5-8, with the possibility of 4th graders joining the team, as team size allows. Practices are once a week after school. Cheerleaders support scheduled, regular season basketball games.
Track is for grades 5-8 with the occasional need for 4th graders to complete the team. Good Shepherd participates in one track meet held at St. Croix Lutheran High School, which is coordinated by the Lutheran Grade School League. Individual events are chosen by students with the guidance of Mr. Arndt. Each student is allowed to run in two running events and be in one field event, or one running event and two field events. Students compete against students in their grade; boys against boys, and girls against girls. Practice information will be posted closer to the actual meet.
Bowling is open to all students in grades 5-8, and no experience is required! It’s a Baker-Style Bowling Program that is the same as high school bowling in the state of Minnesota. Teams are formed based on the talent levels of those participating. Practice is held once a week at Apple Place in Apple Valley. The day and time of practice will be determined shortly before the season begins. Matches are played against schools from our area Lutheran Grade School League. We typically bowl two matches of five games each on Friday evening or Saturday mid-morning at different bowling centers around the Twin Cities area. Matches take about three hours and are a great time to get to know other families!
